How is the economy affecting your horse life?

To all of the Pony Cousins and Horse Lovers out there:

A serious note. The horsetrainer, Julie Goodnight, has a program on RFDTV. I have enjoyed her program for the common sense help she gives horse people.
Julie has put this question on her blog. I tried to write a response, but there are many of you who have addressed this in your own blogs, with better information.

Her blog address:

http://juliegoodnightontheroad.blogspot.com/

This is what she asks...

"How has this economy affected your horse life? Have you cut back on activities? Are you downsizing the herd? Putting off major purchases? Or are you cutting back on other things in your life so that your horse pursuits do not suffer? And how do you feel the economy will change within the next few months? Especially around Christmas? Will you be buying your horse his usual Christmas presents—new blankets and tack?"

Would you take a minute to read her blog, and write a thoughtful response to her? There are so many of us who are very concerned for the horses we love. With her television connections, Julie is in a position to address our concerns to horse lovers everywhere.

Okie and i would appreciate it.
Happy Trails!
SMR

Let me try this again:

I have already quit buying new tack, even layed off buying reins. (I have a slight problem with that one) I'm not spending the fuel to go far out of town for day rides and have curtailed some personal spending and Christmas spending to put up hay for the winter. I'll go check out the other blog.

It's a beautiful picture.
About the economy and the horse products : before buying something, I look for it on the web to know the price and buy the cheaper product but I also ask friends to know if they know the cheaper one to know more about its qualities.
I do not buy anything if I have not planned to do it because it's necessary.

Love that Okie!

I trotted over to Julie's site. How nice of you to comment about my poor Shadow on her site.

Cutting corners around our place means we do without, not the horses.
Can't think of anything I must have except a contented horse.

I did as you asked and popped over to Julie's blog. I didn't particularly care for her thought that the horse economy is recession proof. So the recession has nothing to do with the number of horses being dumped on the market?

I was nice SMR!! But, we all know that it wasn't just the closing of the US slaughter plants that has the market flooded with horses. People can't afford them anymore and lots of people who bought horses during the boom realized that horses are an item that is never going to be paid off...that maintenance bill comes every month-board, feed, farrier, vets. A person can cut back, but only so much. Most people are just going to get out of the horse market entirely-that in itself will affect the sales of all related items.

Okay, I'm off my soapbox. :P

Your Okie is a beauty! I saw one of Julie's shows on RFDTV but it was just at the end of it. I need to check her out again.

My daughter and I don't ride near as much as we used to. I need to call the farrier for new shoes but dang he is so expensive. I guess that will be my b-day/Christmas present to myself!

Melanie: Okie is very sweet! He loves attention and follows me around like one of the dogs. He loves other horses and gets his feelings hurt when they push him around. He doesnt kick or bite them.
kd: i would love to see your rein collection. I have a thing about headstalls and reins.
le cheval: that's smart shopping. I love the internet for giving us options at lower prices and more choices.
Strawberry Lane: Shadow seems a lot like Okie - very mellow and crazy about attention.
BECG: Your soap box is always welcome here.
Trailboss: i enjoy her show. On her blog, she talks about her shows and i am interested in seeing the one about the head tossing. I have seen that behavior so much in other horses.
Adventuregirlwannabe: If you lived around here, you would get to ride Okie or The Golden Boy. You pick.
