So, i needed to renew my drivers license and thought i would head on down to the office to get it done early in the morning on a weekday to avoid the crowd.

I was so naive.

I walked in and was directed, first thing, to get a number.
I had to select a button to correspond to the nature of my business in the drivers license office.
I really didnt have to think about it very long - i wanted to renew my drivers license.
I pushed the button that said "get a drivers license".
The ticket came out and, to my delight, the ticket was "012".

That's cool.
There's about 82 people in here and i got number 012.

So i find a seat next to a dead guy, thinking that i will be in and out in a matter of minutes.

Then the electronic sign over the counter catches my eye.
In bright red digits, the sign says "652".
This is when i realize that i am totally not getting in and out in a matter of minutes.

There was 1 agent behind the counter and 3 more milling around in the background.
It was interesting to watch the mechanics of the agents as they would take turns at the counter. The man would step up to the counter, the red number would flash over his station, the loudspeaker would call out the number in Spanish, the individual would go to the counter.
The agent would just finish with that person, would turn off his red number sign and disappear behind one of the doors in the back.
The next agent would step up to the counter and the process would repeat, the agent would turn off the red number sign and disappear behind a different door.

Fascinating...it was like watching a play or ballet.

The loudspeaker says,
" numero seis, cinco, tres."

Only 357 numbers to go and its my turn, baby!

I fully believe that the DVM is the great equalizer- we all have to do it or if rich enough, have someone stand in line for us! I have often marveled at the choreography of the Government workers behind the desk. I once saw a woman move a stack of papers around the office- three papers- fifteen times. No one ever LOOKED at the papers! She just would put them in someones box go away and then come back and move them to someone elses box and then go away...
Glad you made it out alive...

or did you?

Weird. Last time I was at the DMV, they didn't have this system. You should do it online next time for your own sanity!
